Read into the Steps, see the under-lying purpose; acceptance, surrender, open-mindedness, willingness, humility… these are the spiritual principles that tend to be missing from the lives of alcoholics and addicts and it is these that help you to accomplish the change in addictive behavior that define “recovery” vs. merely abstaining.

I know, it’s easy to get stuck on the God word. I’m an agnostic addict in NA. My attraction is 1- it works, 2- no one else gets it besides someone like me and 3- did I say it works?

In NA, we say “ours is a simple, spiritual, not religious program…”.

The 12-step programs talk about turning yourself over to a higher power, but offer that this power might not be God, but your family or community or whatever else you believe in that’s bigger than you are.

Look into SMART (self management and and recovery traing). Or SOS.
Both are secular with No higher power stuff, but may be hard to find depending where you live.

Now that’s just plain stupid.

It’s bad enough that someone is going through a rough time with alcohol abuse, but to get help they have no other choice than to ‘give’ themselves to a higher power?

What a crock. Give me booze anytime.

Call your local area AA or NA chapter, they have them most all cities now.
