Honest question for 12-step atheists, please?
Question by Blooming Sufi: Honest question for 12-step atheists, please?
Hi all,
I’m somewhat familiar with the 12-step recovery plan utilized by Alcoholics Anonymous & numerous other groups. The plan, while not religious, is spiritual, and entails the belief in some power higher than ourselves. To keep factors simplified, they call this power ‘God’, but it really is very clear that God or this higher power be understood in whatever fashion each individual is comfortable with. The book, “The Twelve Methods for Everybody” suggests that some have named as their ‘god’ a lightbulb or a tree….
I was questioning how several atheists here had been helped making use of a 12-step program. Also, how do/did you define the energy greater than oneself? Do you really feel that the 12-step plan and/or the group you had been affiliated with genuinely gave you the freedom to understand your greater energy on your own terms?
Thank you for all serious, well-thought-out, honest replies !
Tree bless you! ~)
Whoa, back the truck up, guys! 1) I’m not talking about a 12-Step especially FOR atheists, I’m referring to atheists who may have voluntarily taken element in a 12-step program to aid in their recovery of (insert addiction right here)…. 2)I’m not searching for assist, I’m just curious to know atheists’ experiences!

Catholic 12-step program for gays?
Question by Colin: Catholic 12-step plan for gays?
I was wondering what Catholics and others on here really feel about this. Thanks in advance for all respectful, wise answers.
The Catholic Diocese of Colorado Springs is borrowing a page from Alcoholics Anonymous by launching a 12-step plan that offers pastoral care and support for homosexuals.
“It’s not about therapy and not about activism,” mentioned the Rev. Larry Brennan, diocese director of priest formation. “It’s about support.”
The Catholic Church views homosexual relations as a sin, but not homosexual thoughts. It expects those with identical-sex attraction to be celibate.
“The workout of sexuality is reserved for marriage, and that can only happen between a man and a woman,” Brennan said.
Jim Fitzgerald, executive director of Call to Action, a national progressive Catholic group headquartered in Chicago, is skeptical of Twelve Steps of Courage because he contends homosexuality is not sinful.
“It restricts people’s freedom to be the kind of individual they had been produced to be,” Fitzgerald said of Courage.
