How well do alcohol recovery programs actually work?

Question by almintaka: How nicely do alcohol recovery programs really perform?
    Hi Everyone,
Alcoholics Anonymous (“AA”, spiritual), Rational Recovery (“RR”, cognitive), Wise (cognitive), Save Ourselves (“SOS”, cognitive) and other alcohol recovery programs all claim varying levels of achievement in helping alcoholics on the road to recovery. Even so, there is a lot of controversy surrounding their claims, as even a quick search on the web will reveal. Viewing this chaos of opinions from “outside the box”, it certainly appears as though they are all blowing smoke. Anecdotal arguments are utilized, tabloid-style quotations are touted as being authentic, and “my way or the highway” rationalizing is usually used. One thing they all have in widespread is that apparently none of them has a manage on real statistics (though I could be wrong here I just haven’t found any). In addition, independent studies (NIAA, Dawson) have shown that these programs are no far more productive than no program at all. What’s your opion? Do one or a lot more of these programs function greater than nothing?

I think any recovery program works only as well as the time & persistance the addict puts into staying clean.

Can a 12-step program work for anyone who doesn’t believe in God?

Question by Anonymous: Can a 12-step program work for any person who doesn’t think in God?
I know there are several 12-step programs, not all of which concentrate on alcoholism/drugs, but the system revolves close to your belief in a increased power, regardless of whether it is God, or whatever. What about men and women who don’t know if God exists? Everyone have any relevant knowledge?

How exactly does th 12 step program work? (for addiction)?

Question by St Lo: How exactly does th 12 step program function? (for addiction)?
My dad is a 12 step system for addiction, not to alcohol some thing else, and i feel like hes been brain washed. he was never religious before now hes a God freak and in my viewpoint worse than just before. Its like he transfered his addiction to God. can anyone clarify precisely how it functions?

    Answer by frankie
Please support your father in his journey to freedom from addiction. How can you say he is worse? 12 Step Programs emphasize the require to turn ourselves over to a Higher Power ( most use God ).. Each and every newbie picks a sponsor and functions the 12 actions-no simple task. It has to do with admitting your illness/denial, how you have hurt other people, and generating amends. This is a very quick synopsis.
Rather of becoming critical, why not go to a meeting with your Dad? He needs alot of support appropriate now. Trust me, he will mellow out with the God factor, but he desires this now for his recovery. Truly, he could need it for the rest of his life, but what do you care, as extended as he is wholesome and no longer trapped by his addiction.
You might want to attend Alanon for people whose lives have been affected by living with an addict.
You as well have suffered from your dad’s actions. Let him know how proud you are of him as he is now fighting for his life and household-God or no God. Support him.
